An eco-sustainable alternative for sunglasses

Have you ever thought about the impact your sunglasses can have on the environment? Just an accessory of our clothing can actually seriously affect our planet. Hence the commitment of new brands to create a product that can offer consumers an eco-sustainable, biodegradable, but no less beautiful and performing alternative.

Ozeano

Ozeano was born from the observation of the reality of two travelers. During a trip to Cambodia, in front of beaches full of waste a sense of horror catches the founders of the brand. So it was born a period of study regarding the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans and a strong desire to find a remedy.

A few years and a lot of research after, the right idea arrives. Looking at people presents at the beaches of Sidney, the founders of Ozeano note the incredible amount of sunglasses present. Through more in-depth research, they thus discover the high number of sunglasses produced annually and its impact. With a decomposition period of 450 years per pair, a product that may seem relatively harmless risks creating large amounts of waste.

Ozeano was born then from the desire to offer consumers an eco-sustainable alternative. In a first approach, glasses with a recycled plastic structure are born, modeled with an injection mold. Still dissatisfied with the solution found that cannot entirely eliminate the creation of plastic waste, they do not stop in the search.

This leads to glasses made entirely of biodegradable bio-acetate. The manufacturing takes place not far from Sidney (where the glasses are designed), in one of the last artisan realities in the area. All accessories sold together with the glasses are also GOTS or FSC certified, and shipments are all carbon neutral.

The motto of the brand and will continue to remain “impact optimization”, always aiming to do more for the planet. Hence the collaboration with the organization “the Seabin Project”, contributing to the removal of 12kg of plastic from the ocean for every pair of sunglasses sold. The brand is also awaiting its B-Corps certification. The B Corporations (as already seen for the case of the Mud Jeans brand) are certified by B lab as companies that meet the best standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and legal responsibility.

PelaVision

PelaVision was born as a branch of the Pela brand to take its mission into new areas and spread it more and more. This mission consists in creating a world free of waste, which is why all products are created with materials that are considerable of the environment. The brand’s motto can be summed up in “daily products without daily waste”.

This need for positive innovation also arises in the case of Jeremy Lang, Pela’s founder, from a trip to ocean beaches. Finding them contaminated by plastics, Jeremy’s desire to find a substitute material for plastic to be used in everyday products arises.

The first product of the brand are fully biodegradable smartphone cases, to touch a product of daily use and frequently changed. Pela is also very careful as a company in creating a responsible community that can make this goal a reality. For this reason, the brand has developed core values, which can be summarized through four “Cs”: Community, Creativity, Consciousness, Courage.

Pela’s sunglasses, inspired by the covers, are fully compostable, this required a great deal of work in eliminating screws and joints made of iron, but now even the lenses are biodegradable.

Pela also takes care with the Pela 360 program to recover and reuse old sunglasses that have been discarded and undertakes with each purchase to donate a part of them to initiatives for cleaning the oceans.
